CAPACITY CROWD AT FREE PRESENTATION IN TORONTO

The Hand Eye Society, a free-to-join not-for-profit organization created in 2009 with the intention of 'meshing Toronto's videogame communities', has become known for a series of presentations & social events held once every two months or so at Unit Bar on Queen St. West. The events typically attract a wide variety of creatives, writers, artists, musicians & enthusiasts who are curious about or already involved in exploring the possibilities of videogame-type audiovisual entertainment & artistic works. For more about Toronto's remarkable Hand Eye Society please click here.

The most recent event, held last Thursday February 11th, was hosted by Capy, an independent Toronto videogame studio, in association with Superbrothers. The presentation, introduced by Capy's president Mr. Nathan Vella, featured a talk given by Mr. Kris Piotrowski, creative director at Capy, who related the challenges & discoveries involved in creating a still-in-development experimental music-inspired videogame type project named Heartbeat, intended for eventual release on Nintendo's WiiWare. For more about Capy & Hearbeat please click here.

To close out the presentation, the capacity crowd was also offered a brief glimpse at Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, another experimental music-inspired project, this one intended for eventual release on Apple's touchtronic machinery. The entire S:S&S EP team was in attendance including the legendary Mr. Jim Guthrie & Capy's starfleet engineering team of Mr. Jon Maur & Mr. Frankie Leung. Despite a few glitches the event seemed to be very well received. For more about Superbrothers & S:S&S EP please click here.

The photograph above was taken by Mark Rabo, a Hand Eye Society member, photographer, enthusiast, adventurer & one of the organizers of another leading Toronto videogame culture event known as Gamercamp. The next Hand Eye Society social (date TBD) will be presented by designer, illustrator, artist & DIY videogame creator Mr. Benjamin Rivers whose multitudinous activities are recorded online here.

A BRAVE EXPERIMENT IN I/O CINEMA?

The S:S&S EP presentation itself consisted of a ten minute real-time playthrough of an in-progress build of S:S&S EP played on iPod Touch, filmed & projected for the assembled audience to see. The imagery & storyline, inspired & built upon a made-in-Playstation musical compositon by Mr. Jim Guthrie known as 'Under a Tree', presented a lone hero journeying on foot through a misty & majestic grey/pink pre-dawn forest world, along the way encountering several rabbits, a few deer & Mr. Jim Guthrie himself before eventually reaching the safety & comfort of a thatched roof cabin below a mountain pass presided over by a menacing wolf. The images above offer a glimpse into this microscopic world of lakes, mountains, waterfalls & log bridges.

For members of Toronto's Hand Eye Society, a ten minute clip intended to approximate the recent public presentation of S:S&S EP will shortly be made available online for a limited time. The footage is not ready for wide release so access to the clip will be necessarily limited, however for faraway friends & press with a broad interest in music, visual art & film: please feel free to get in touch.
